Fish Tales

For visitors and younger people who aren’t familiar with Beaverton or more specifically, Lake Simcoe, this lake offers diverse habitats for various fish species.  Beaverton has earned the title of “The Smallmouth Bass Capital” of Canada due to its reputation for excellent smallmouth bass fishing. The area boasts numerous lakes and waterways that provide ideal habitats for smallmouth bass, attracting anglers from all over the country. The plentiful supply of smallmouth bass combined with the region’s scenic beauty has solidified Beaverton's status as a premier destination for bass fishing enthusiasts.

Thanks to the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority, efforts have been made to reduce phosphorous loading into the lake so oxygen levels have increased.  What was once a lake that was overfished and stocked by the MNR, we have discovered in recent years that Trout, Whitefish and herring are once again “naturalizing” in a cleaner and healthier lake that serves as an important recreational resource for cottagers, anglers, campers and boaters.  Our lives and that of its animals, plants and insects rely on its health. A healthy watershed supports sustainable communities.

FYI

  • The Lake Simcoe watershed is about 3,400 square kilometres in size.
  • It's situated in our municipal communities of York Region, Durham Region, Simcoe County, Barrie, Orillia and Kawartha Lakes
  • Its average depth is 15 metres, but it gets as deep as 42 metres near the mouth of Kempenfelt Bay
  • The lake is part of a much larger system known as the Trent-Severn Waterway

When you have some time, we invite you to stroll down to the Harbour where some of our local artists have paid homage to just some of the fish indigenous to our beautiful Lake Simcoe.
